Ludovico Massa, known as Lulù, a Milanese factory worker, with health issues and with two dependent families, is a staunch supporter of piecework, thanks to which he can afford the car, other small and futile consumer goods and perhaps, one day, even a fur for his “lady”. A workaholic worker loved by the bosses for the exceptional rhythms of production and hated by his colleagues for his excessive servility. While being able to enjoy the esteem of superiors and a good salary, he is unable, because of the alienation caused by the factory, to have a normal social and family life. One day, while he boasts to his comrades his rhythms, he loses a finger in an accident: it is the beginning of a crisis that will lead him to review his political and existential positions.
