Bernardo Bertolucci’s masterpiece with the marvelous photography by Vittorio Storaro, and the gorgeous Jean-Louis Trentignant and Stefania Sandrelli. The film is based on the great novel by Alberto Moravia and has won significant awards, including the David di Donatello Award, one Oscar Nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and one Golden Globe Nomination for Best International Feature Film.
Just before the Second World War, Marcello Clerici, spy of the fascist political police, went on a honeymoon in Paris. The honeymoon, however, is only a cover: unbeknownst to his wife, the man must eliminate his old professor now dissident. But Clerici has not reckoned with Anna, the professor’s attractive wife, who drags him into an erotic and political whirlwind.
The film has been restored in 4K at L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, by Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Minerva Pictures, with the support of Bernardo Bertolucci Foundation, starting from the original camera negative. With the contribution of the Ministry of Culture and the support of “A Season of Classic Films”, an initiative promoted by ACE – Association des Cinémathèques Européennes within the European Commission’s Creative MEDIA programme.
It has been presented in Bologna, in Piazza Maggiore last June, as part of “Il cinema ritrovato”, in the presence of about seven thousand people.
