Luis Buñuel: The Genius of Surrealism in an Unmissable Retrospective at the Cineteca Milano

10 January 2025

Minerva Pictures is proud to present an extraordinary retrospective dedicated to the great Luis Buñuel, pioneer of surrealist cinema and one of the most influential masters of the seventh art, hosted at the Cineteca Milano. Four screenings to rediscover the provocative and visionary language of a filmmaker who defied rules and conventions.

The journey begins on January 12 with The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz (1955), a darkly humorous tale mocking the rigidity of Catholic education, intertwining murderous impulses and frustrations in a whirlwind of black satire. A work now ranked among the 100 greatest Mexican films of all time.
On the same day, Susana (1950) will also be screened, Buñuel’s second Mexican production. Co-written with screenwriter Jaime Salvador, it explores forbidden desires and social tensions, uncovering the complexity of human relationships through the sharp lens of surrealism.

The retrospective continues on January 27 with Los Olvidados (1950), a cornerstone of 20th-century cinema set in the outskirts of Mexico City. Here, Buñuel starkly portrays the poverty and marginalization of street children with raw realism. Winner of the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, it was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2003.
Finally, on January 29, the focus shifts to Tristana (1970), inspired by the novel by Benito Pérez Galdós and screened out of competition at the 23rd Cannes Film Festival. Starring Catherine Deneuve, Fernando Rey, and Franco Nero, this intense and symbolic drama explores oppression and moral ambiguity, revealing the deep conflict of a young woman trapped under her guardian’s control.

Join us at the Cineteca Milano to rediscover four iconic films by a director who has left an indelible mark on collective imagination! The complete Buñuel collection, featuring 13 titles, is available exclusively on Rarovideo Channel through The Film Club, Amazon Prime Video, and TIMVision!
